Breakdown, 2014

Breakdown is a color study of three works by the French Proto-Impressionist artist Paul Cezanne: The Basket of Apples, Still Life with Apples, and Still Life with Skull. The colors were pulled from each painting and sent through a series of algorithms which broke them down into basic categories for analysis such as percentage of area covered, overall average, and RGB values.

Breakdown 1 shows the comparison between the three different works with each painting along the y-axis and pixelated color averages, percentage of area covered, and overall color average, respectively, along the x-axis. Breakdown 2 takes a closer look at a single work, Still Life with Apples, showing RGB (broken into percentage present), color, and grayscale values across the x-axis and pixelated color averages, percentage of area covered, and overall color average, respectively, along the y-axis. Breakdown 3 shows the pixelated color averages of each painting alongside the RGB values (broken into percentage present) for those colors.

Breakdown was made using the open source data representation software NodeBox.
